Position Title: National Organizing Manager, Climate
Position Location: Candidates are welcome to apply from across the U.S. Those that are near a Popular Democracy office in DC or Brooklyn may be asked to work from a Popular Democracy office one or two days/week if necessary. Applicants outside of those areas may be required to travel to a Popular Democracy office occasionally.
Popular Democracy is seeking a National Organizing Manager, Climate. This is a full-time, exempt position.

About the Position:
We are seeking a National Organizing Manager, Climate to join our Basebuilding Department.
The National Organizing Manager, Climate will implement strategic basebuilding plans with affiliates to support their climate campaigns. This position will also lead the Popular Democracy Climate Defenders Member Leadership training program and support affiliates in developing and implementing additional political education and skills training materials for member leaders to support their leadership development and advance climate campaigns. This position is a powerful opportunity to help envision and grow the capacities required to advance the bold climate justice organizing that is required in this moment of history.
It is expected that the National Organizing Manager, Climate will travel and attend in-person trainings, meetings, and actions with CPD/A affiliates and partners approximately once a month.
We estimate that candidates will have about 10 years of relevant experience for this position, but our review of candidates for this role will focus on whether they can fill the needs of the position, not just years of experience.
The National Organizing Manager, Climate will report to the Chief of Basebuilding.
Primary Responsibilities:
The National Organizing Manager, Climate will:
- Partner with with fellow Base-Building Department staff and the Senior National Organizer for Climate Justice to develop multi-year goals and a work plan to significantly grow the number of Black, Latinx, and low-income communities engaged in climate justice organizing and campaigning;
- Support Popular Democracy affiliates with the growth of their climate base-building. This will include identifying a strategic basebuilding goal, regular 1:1 support for affiliate organizers, helping to anchor a national community of community organizers on climate, work with affiliates to center base-building in their climate campaigning, and more;
- Lead in person and virtual political education and skills training for affiliate members through the Climate Defenders Member Leadership Academy;
- Collaborate with Popular Democracy staff to drive scaled list-building and follow-up organizing engagement, to provide organizing skill and political formation training offerings to grassroots members and organizers engaged on climate, to support week-long climate organizing blitzes that bring together organizers and members from across affiliates to work together closely in a single place, and more;
- Support Popular Democracy affiliates in launching and/or building out emerging climate organizing efforts and serving as the climate point person for a set of affiliates;
- Engage with the larger climate justice movement to build transformational and deeply collaborative partnerships;
- Support fundraising work, including participation in funder meetings and preparing reports and proposals.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- Significant experience as a community or labor organizer;
- Experience facilitating trainings using popular education methodology;
- A track record of effectiveness in base-building, campaigning, and electoral engagement;
- Meaningful experience in, and dedication to, work focused on climate change;
- Demonstrated commitment to scaled recruitment and leadership development, especially of those most impacted. This includes a deep commitment to building base-building people’s institutions as a core element of building power;
- The ability to collaborate with diverse organizations and partners;
- Results-focused, team-oriented, organized, and responsive;
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly for site visits, training, and other affiliate engagement, as well as occasional internal staff meetings;
- A commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep understanding of challenges facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, communities of color, disabled people, LGBTQ+ folks, and people at the intersections of the above communities.
Hiring Process:
Candidates should expect to participate in two rounds of group interviews and a job simulation exercise. Final candidates will be asked to provide references.
Salary and Benefits:
This position is included in a collective bargaining unit represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild. Specific employment terms are subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The salary for this category 3 position is determined by a salary calculation system that is set by the CBA and is not negotiable. The starting salary is $78,000 and can increase up to $88,000, depending on a variety of factors as described in the CBA.
